Questions to Ask When Applying for a Home Loan

Blog

If you plan to buy a house this year, you must work on is getting a home loan. Some people face trouble getting approved for home loans, while others do not. If you have great credit, money in the bank, and control over your finances, you should have no problem getting a mortgage. When you begin searching for one, here are some questions you might want to ask your lender.

How Much Do You Need for the Down Payment?

It is always wise to ask your lender about the down payment you will need for the loan. Most lenders require a down payment, but the amount varies. Your lender might tell you that you need 3.5% down. They might also tell you that you need much more than this amount. You can compare mortgage programs to find one that requires a down payment you can afford.

Will You Pay Mortgage Insurance or Premiums?

Asking about mortgage insurance and premiums is also essential. Some mortgage programs do not require these extra expenses, but some do. You might be able to avoid paying these premiums by putting more money down, and you can ask your lender about this if you have questions.

Are There Ways to Get a Lower Interest Rate?

You might also want to talk to your lender about getting a lower interest rate. You can ask if there are any ways to reduce your interest rate. The lender might suggest getting a shorter loan, as shorter loans sometimes offer lower interest rates. The lender might also suggest putting more money down or buying points, as these options also result in acquiring a lower interest rate.

How Much Are the Closing Costs?

On average, people pay between 2% to 5% of the home's purchase price for closing costs. Therefore, if you buy a home for $100,000, you will pay between $2,000 to $5,000 for these costs. If you buy a home for a higher price, you will pay more. You might be able to find lower closing costs by shopping around for your mortgage loan. You cannot find a loan without closing costs, though, so keep this in mind as you shop.
